The Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet of the High Renaissance Michelangelo (1475 –1564) was born in the Republic of Florence. No one can claim for certain whether Michelangelo had physical relationships since he was described by a contemporary painter, Condivi, as celibate as a monk. Nevertheless, the nature of his sexuality is made apparent in his poetry. The openly homoerotic nature of his poetry has been a source of doubt to later generations.
